Fully funded PhD position in Knowledge Graphs & Cultural Heritage at FIZ Karlsruhe

Job Description:

The offered position will be in the research department „Information Service Engineering“ at FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure (FIZ/ISE).

The doctorate will be supervised by  Prof. Dr. Harald Sack (FIZ Karlsruhe & Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT, Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods).

Teaching (at KIT) is not mandatory, but welcome on a volunteer basis.

Work will be focused on challenging third party funded national and international research projects related to the PhD topic. 

In particular for this position the candidate will work in the project “Transferring the Nuremberg Topographical and Temporal Model into the Public” (TRANSRAZ) funded by the Leibniz Association within the Leibniz Transfer funding programme. The interdisciplinary project combines cultural heritage, historical sciences, semantic technologies, and deep learning. One goal of the project (related to the advertised position) is to interlink 3D reconstructions of the historical city of Nuremburg with external data sources to generate a knowledge graph. 

 

Qualifications and Skills:

Candidates have an outstanding master´s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in computer science or another discipline relevant for semantic technologies (as e.g. mathematics, computational linguistics, information sciences, computer engineering, etc.) and will target a Ph.D. degree.

We expect eagerness to participate in team work, outstanding analytical competence, strong interest in interdisciplinary research, experience in software engineering, as well as superior organization and communication skills.

Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Language skills in German are nevertheless important and highly welcome. If necessary applicants are expected to improve their English and German language skills through intensive language classes.

Qualified candidates who are about to complete their master degree are also encouraged to apply.

Work contract with a salary based on the collective agreement for public sector employees (German Tarifvertrag öffentlicher Dienst (TVöD)), which depends on the candidate’s profile (TVöD-13). The position is limited to two years with an optional extension.
